Diseases such as Myotonic Dystrophy, DM I, can be referred to as silent diseases. You hardly know they are there until it is too late. By the time muscular dystrophy manifests, it is often too late because its manifestation is the final stage. It lays low, damaging the body slowly until it the organs start to malfunction.
DMI is caused by toxic levels of RNA in the body. RNA is little bits of DNA converted into protein. Their production can reach toxic levels in the cell if certain commands issued by the DNA are repeated. This results to over production of RNAs which will settle in the cell and result into DMI. When DMI manifests, body organs that rely on muscles such as the heart, the nervous system and hormonal system begin to fail.
Not much has been done in terms of research and medicine development in this regard. Today, no treatment can truly deal with these diseases at the root cause. For this reason, expansion therapies are currently raising funds towards the research and medicine development of DMI and other diseases in their portfolio. So far, they have been able to collect 53.3million dollars towards this course.
Their quest to find a cure to conditions that result from toxic levels of RNA in the body has attracted interested parties such as Alexandria Venture Investments, RA Capital Management, Novartis Venture Fund, Sanofi Ventures, Kleiner Perkins and 5AM Ventures. All these corporations pledge to support this course in every way they can.
Scott Rocklage, the managing director of 5AM Ventures, gave a press release naming the head researcher to be Matthew D. Disney. He also expressed confidence in expansion therapeutics and its quest to come up with molecule medications that will address RNA related diseases. When they will be able to keep the RNA from reaching toxic levels, the will have found a cure for these diseases.
Scott Rocklage is a renowned chemist who graduated from University of Carlifonia with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. His passion to change the world through chemistry saw him get his PH.D from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Scott Rocklage’s desire to come up with new inventions especially in the field of medicine has seen him have 30 medications patented. Some of his own and others co-invented.
